AstraZeneca today announced the introduction of a new cholesterol-lowering drug for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia. AstraZeneca has now received approval for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia.
“This marks the final stage in the development of a new medication for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia,” said Dr. Paul A. E. Adams, AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer. “This new drug will help us better understand how statins work in the blood.”
The cholesterol-lowering drug was developed as a treatment for primary hypercholesterolemia in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disease that causes high cholesterol in the blood.

“This drug is an innovative treatment for primary hypercholesterolemia in heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia,” said Dr. Adams.
The new cholesterol-lowering drug will also be an innovative treatment for patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, where the patient has a genetically inherited disease, which is linked to high cholesterol in the blood.
“This new therapy will improve the clinical efficacy of statins in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia. It will also reduce the incidence and progression of atherosclerosis,” said Dr. M. Pascual, AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer. “This drug will enable us to better understand how statins work in the blood and to optimize treatment outcomes for patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.”
The cholesterol-lowering drug will be available in the US only in a prescription form and will not be available in the UK and other countries.
